Kick Butts Week
Every April or March the students of Dover Youth to Youth hold Kick Butts Week (KBW) where a variety of tobacco prevention activities are conducted by the students.
KBW is scheduled to ensure that it includes the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids’ Annual Kick Butts Day. During this week Y2Yplans and implements many tobacco prevention projects and activities, such as:
Plaster the Walls
Students cover the walls of Dover middle School with anti-tobacco posters and leave them up for that week. The school is saturated with all types of posters, including ones made by the students and others commercially purchased.
Gear Exchange
An event where all members of the community are encouraged to bring in gear (such as: T-shirts, hats, glasses, towels, bags, toys) that advertise tobacco, drugs or alcohol. These items are exchanged for an assortment of our gear with a positive tobacco and drug-free message.
Presentations
In classrooms and at larger assemblies. This can include guest speakers or presentations like History of Lies conducted by the students of Dover Youth to Youth.
Radio Ad Campaigns
Y2Y writes and produces radio public services announcements on a variety of drug prevention topics. WOKQ and other local radio stations play Y2Y’s tobacco related PSAs during the week.
Radio Interviews – We try to schedule at least two live appearances on morning shows during the week. In 2005 for example, we appeared on the WERZ morning show Ralphie and Danielle and on WOKQ with the Morning Crew.
Logo Lampoon
Art Contest awards night for finalists. This evening is done in conjunction with the Gear Exchange. It is a city-wide art contest where students lampoon the tobacco or alcohol industry’s advertising.
